Choosing best products for you
Essential oils are all-natural, aromatic compounds which can be found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They are generally experienced beautifully and powerfully fragrant. When you have enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a lavender field, or the smell of freshly cut mint, they give you a glance for the aromatic qualities of essential oils. Essential oils are able lift the mood, calm the senses, and elicit most powerful emotional responses. Yet the usage of essential oils goes well beyond their fragrant appeal.
Throughout history in many cultures have been familiar with their health-promoting properties. Modern trends toward holistic approaches to self care and growing scientific validation of integrative practices of healthcare are driving kind a rediscovery of the profound health benefits allowed by essential oils. Many have powerful cleansing properties. The most unique chemical structure they have allows them to deliver targeted benefits through topical application. Certain oils may also be used as dietary aids to promote vitality and well-being.
From plants to essential oil products
Therapeutic-grade essential oils are most often extracted via a low-heat steam distillation process in which steam is circulated under pressure through plant material, liberating the essential oils into the steam. As the steam mixture cools, the water and oils are separated and the oil is collected in its pure form. To ensure the highest quality oil extract of correct chemical composition, temperature and pressure must be monitored very closely. Too little heat and pressure will not release the valuable oil; too much can fracture an extract’s delicate chemical composition and alter its potency.
Equally important to the carefully controlled extraction process, are the meticulous selection of correct plant species and plant parts harvested at the perfect moment when their essential oil compounds are most concentrated, is also required for a quality therapeutic-grade essential oil extract. This complex process is as much an art form as it is a science and requires experienced growers and distillers working together to ensure a superior product.
How to find right ones?
Using essential oils is intuitively simple and highly satisfying. However, there are available many brands of essential oils and sometimes things are confusing, considering their vast combinations and various wellness applications. It’s usual to have trying different brands of essential oils with varying results, before you can find your own. It’s challenging, since there is a a lot of contradictory information out there.
You may find out that essential oils, which may look promising at first sight, is adulterated and filled with synthetics. For example, there has been severe shortage of blue tansy oil so many companies are selling heavily adulterated versions of this oil. When such oil from one popular wholesaler of essential oils was studied, results turn out to be quite disturbing. There were components (left photo shows them highlighted in yellow), which were coming from other oils such as wild Moroccan chamomile (Ormenis mixta or multicaulis) causing the presence of Santolina alcohol, blue (German) chamomile from Egypt giving rise to bisabolol oxide A and various artemisia possibilities (wormwood, mugwort), giving rise to the high thujone content in the oil. If people believe this is pure oil and take it internally or topically, it could be truly harmful, because true blue tansy (Tanacetum annum), unlike regular tansy oil (Tanacetum vulgare) does not contain any thujone, a known neurotoxin. In the case of this wholesaler the oil being sold had only little, if any, actual blue tansy oil in it! In this case the oil was analyzed by customer, because the supplier not only didn’t do they job but were against of anybody who wanted to study the substance they called essential oil.
That kind of beheviour is obviously the reason why everyone needs to be careful, because many companies are downright dishonest. If your essential oils are not pure, you may not have consistent results as your body heals, and in the rare cases the substance might be even harmful for the intented use. If you don’t think essential oils work correctly, most likely reason is that you are using a poor quality of oils. This mean that you have to do some research when choosing the right essential oil company. Fortunately, you have all help needed here – please consider the following questions when choosing your product:
- Where were the plants grown? Composition of the oil may vary depending upon location of the plant General rule is that pure essential oils are gathered from plants that are indigenous to the region.
- How and when were the plants harvested? Plants must be harvested at varying times of the year and even specific times of the day in order to maintain a potent chemical composition.
- What is the distillation process? Distillation times and temperatures can make a difference in oil purity. Temperature and pressure must be closely monitored.
- What type of testing is done? Mass spectrometry and gas chromatography are both standard tests to determine oil purity. Ideally, essential oils will also be tested against an ideal standard.
- Are all batches tested? The mass spectrometry test is fairly expensive, thus, not all oil companies test every batch for purity. Testing of every batch ensures consistency in therapeutic use.
- Are the essential oils safe for consumption? Essential oils can be identified with a supplement label indicating a “GRAS” rating (Generally Recognized as Safe) for internal consumption. Very few essential oils have this rating.
